TROUBLES OF A 'WOULD-BE' AUTHOR.
I've been doing the 'talking circuit' for almost a year now speaking about my memoir, and while the response has been good, I now and again have troubles with my accent.
This all started when I emigrated to Australia and the Aussies found it hard to understand some of my word pronunciation....this continued with my marriage and then with my three daughters...
I put up with this in good humour for over 30 years, but when we decided, as a family, to visit Scotland in 1990,I thought I'd get some of my own back as apart from me, all spoke with the Australian accent.
How wrong I was, after a week in Scotland my uncle said to me, he could understand my family perfectly..but he couldn't understand me!
This year in June my wife and I again visited Scotland and I took some time out to promote my book.
One of the talks I gave was to my old primary School in Glasgow, where I was a pupil in the late '40s.
My wife and I were having an enjoyable time with the children and they asked many questions about Australia, then one little boy put his hand up and asked why they could understand my wife when she spoke, but they had trouble understanding me!
...After sixty years, NOTHINGS CHANGED!
mind you, they did enjoy the snippets from my book....
